Soldiers Home Lunch 'n Learn
We kicked off Preservation Month 2024 and the Soldiers Home Tour Season with a Soldiers Home Lunch 'n Learn! Our expert volunteers, Laura and Terry, gave a webinar presentation on the history of the Soldiers Home. Laura and Terry have been involved in the Soldiers Home for years and are very knowledgeable on the history of this historic campus! |

Latinx Milwaukee and Historic Preservation. We welcomed Marquette University’s Latinx Studies professor, Dr. Sergio M. González, for a great discussion on Latinxs in the city of Milwaukee. Latinxs, who have had a historical presence in the city for over one hundred years, now make up nearly 20% of Milwaukee residents. However, there are no landmarks on the National or State Register of Historic Places commemorating Latinx history in the city. Dr. González shared some of the important stories of Latinx Milwaukee and how we can work to ensure the benefits of historic preservation are accessible to all.

Three Monumental Mosaics Defining Milwaukee's Modernist Landscape with Lillian Sizemore of Lillian Sizemore Design - 8/11/21. This informative program dove into the awesome beauty of Milwaukee's monumental mosaics and why they and their buildings so important to preserve, including the War Memorial Center (1959, mosaic by Edmund Lewandowski); Marine Plaza, now known as Chase Tower (1962, mosaic by Merritt Yearsley), and Milwaukee State Office Building (1963, mosaic by Marjorie Kreilick).

Revitalization Through Preservation with Rebecca Mitich from Husch Blackwell and our own Jeremy Ebersole - 7/13/21. This fantastic program was part of UEDA's Emerging Topics Series and provided an informative session on how to approach different types of preservation projects, the benefits of using historic tax credits, and an in-depth look at the Milwaukee Soldiers Home restoration project.

Saving the Soldiers Home in partnership with the Waukesha County Historical Society and Museum Speaker Series - 2/9/21. MPA President Peter Zanghi talks about the 90+ acre National Historic Landmark and National Register of Historic Places District that makes up the Soldiers Home, as well as our ongoing efforts to advocate for vacant and endangered historic buildings on the campus so they continue to serve veterans and the entire community for years to come.
