Get to know the MPA Intern!
Tim Houge
We're so excited to have Tim Houge interning with us this spring semester! Get to know his fascinating background in historic preservation and history.
My love of history began in the fourth grade when I first learned about Wisconsin’s involvement in the Civil War, and it has grown since then. I am currently a Ph.D. student at Marquette University in the history department, studying 20th Century Indigenous History. I received my B.S. in World History from the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse in December 2016, and my M.A. in 20th-century U.S. History from Marquette University in 2019. I hope to apply what I have learned, and what I continue to learn, to my position as an intern with MPA. My goal is to help continue diversifying the scope of MPA and the important work of historic preservation here in Milwaukee. |
1. What three words best define you?
Positive, persistent, passionate.
2. What motivates you?
My determination to be an advocate and leave the world a better, more informed place for future generations.
3. What is your favorite book and movie?
My favorite book (series) is the Red Rising series by Pierce Brown. If you are into dystopian futuristic space opera, this is the series to read. Picking a favorite movie is certainly a challenge, but I would have to go with the original theatrical version of Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back.
4. What’s one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
People are always shocked when I tell them I competed in Show Choir in high school. Our group, Center Stage, even competed at Nationals in New York City in 2011!
5. What is your favorite free time activity?
My favorite free time activities are exploring Milwaukee’s many amazing restaurants with my partner Katherine, hanging out with our cat Louie, playing golf, and reading, when I can.
6. What is one of your favorite places in Milwaukee? Outside of Milwaukee?
My two favorite places in Milwaukee are Grant Park overlooking the lake, and Bryant’s Cocktail Lounge. My favorite place outside of Milwaukee is Shi Shi Beach in the northwest corner of Washington State. The sea cliffs and ocean views are spectacular.
7. If you could become a fictional character for one day, who would it be?
Willy Wonka (I do love candy).
8. What inspires you and why?
I have many different inspirations, including being very self-driven, but my advisor inspires me. He has accomplished so much at a young age in academia and I hope one day to emulate him.
9. What do you see as the future of historic preservation?
I see the future of historic preservation as a future on inclusivity, diversity, and equity. A vast diaspora makes up our shared histories, and all those voices deserve to be preserved equitably.
10. Why should people support MPA?
MPA has an excellent vision for their future and the future of Milwaukee. One of economic prosperity, social equity, and environmental responsibility, all of which can and should be supported.
Positive, persistent, passionate.
